Some slight additions have been made. These, in the body of the text are indicated by an asterisk, and in the notes by brackets. The original work was carried only through the reign of Theodosius I. As the requirements of our American schools call for a treatment of the period from that time to Charlemagne, such an addition will be found in Chap ters XXVIII - XXXII. In these chapters there is no claim to originality, even of presentation, owing to the extreme con ciseness necessary.
