From personal interviews and from correspondence with Spicers of the present day we can truthfully state that the family in all its branches has ever been noted for its common sense, firmness of character, great natural intelligence, honesty, fortitude, capacity for self-support, and independence of opinions. We find them successful as farmers, merchants, ship owners, physicians, ministers of the gospel, and mechanics. We have not found many lawyers but enough to show that the ability to plead before the bar of justice has not been wanting.
