Publisher's Synopsis

Illustrated with photographs, plans and maps, this book examines the issues underlying the conservation of the historic Stone Town of Zanzibar. Zanzibar Stone Town presents the problems of conservation in its most acute forms: should it be preserved for the tourists or should it be allowed to grow for the benefit of the inhabitants? Can ways be found to accommodate conflicting social and economic pressures? North America: Ohio U Press; Tanzania: Zanzibar Museums.
