He brought with him horses and mules for beasts of burden, cattle and hogs for food, and dogs for hunting.

Going northward, he travelled along the west coast of Florida, through Georgia, and turning west came into Alabama in July, 1540. He entered in Cherokee County and went down the Coosa and Ala bama rivers and up the Tombigbee passing thence into the present State of Mississippi.
