The 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment was organized at Murfreesboro, by consolidating the battalions of Col. Charles T. Goode and Lt. Col. M. N. Slaughter--the latter being the cavalry of Hilliard's Legion, which had passed through the Kentucky campaign. The unit suffered greatly at Jimtown, Resaca, Dalton, and New Hope Church and saw arduous service throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Following the fall of Atlanta they participated in the raid into Saltville, Virginia before returning to South Carolina in January of 1865 in time to participate in the Battle of Aiken.
