Publisher's Synopsis
This volume of selected papers from the Ninth International Conference on the History of Science in East Asia (ICHSEA) addresses diverse topics in astronomy, traditional Chinese medicine, the history of mathematics, and Western science in East Asia. ICHSEA provides a forum for scholars of East Asian science to share their findings, to reinforce existing ties, and to explore new areas of research collaboration.;Three papers on aspects of the history of science in Vietnam and the Philippines have been revised for publication. They not only address topics of interest but should also afford an important comparative viewpoint. Some of the papers are theoretical, while others are technical or pursue subjects of historical interest. The papers are grouped under eight general headings: "Philosophy/Cultures of Science and Technology"; "Science Policy"; "Medicine and the Life Sciences"; "Western Scientific Influence"; "Mathematics"; "Astronomy"; "Technology/Technique"; and "Scientific Literature".
