Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Historic Churches of America
In the year 1607, under a charter of King James the First, what is known as the Popham Colony was established near the mouth of the Kennebec River. Worship was maintained there for the few months of its existence. But no man knows where was the altar which was established for so short a time.
With the arrival of Captains Newport and Smith in the James River and the establishment of Jamestown, which we are celebrating in this year 1907, begins the history of Christian wor ship conducted regularly by Englishmen for three centuries.
