Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Hints for the Earnest Student, or a Year-Book for the Young
My little book is more especially intended for those who, in the common acceptation of the word, have completed their educa tion, and are now to be considered as depending rather on self-culture than the assistance of others for their future mental progression. To such young persons some of the plans I mention may prove useful. For many of them, I am indebted to thebeloved parents, in whose happy system of home education they found a place; and it is therefore from my own experience that I can speak of the pleasure thus imparted to study. As my Object has been usefulness, and not originality, I have not scrupled to make use Of all the resources which an excellent library placed within my reach, and may take as my motto the words Of the French moralist I have here made a collection of culled ?owers, and have brought nothing of my own, but the string that unites them together.
