April 1986 saw the submission of the Nobel Prize-winning Bednorz-Muller paper. This resulted in a growth of research into superconductivity. Progress in the field in the two years since the Bednorz-Muller paper was the topic of an international conference held at the University of Alabama on the second anniversary of the article's submission.
