Publisher's Synopsis
This book chronicles stories of holy life and human endeavour spanning 14 centuries since the foundation of Saint Wilfrid's original church on the site of Hexham Abbey and Priory Buildings. It is from here that the town of Hexham has grown in tandem with the Abbey which stands at its heart and remains central to community life. While much of today's Abbey dates to the 12th and 13th centuries, Wilfrid's Anglo-Saxon crypt, which dates to 674AD, survives at its heart as a place of pilgrimage, prayer and historic significance. Meanwhile, the Abbey's 21st century life of worship, community, heritage, and culture is inextricably linked to its holy and at times turbulent history.
