Publisher's Synopsis
Across the boundaries of epochs, this volume examines the effects of tensions and interactions between norms and practices of rule using the example of the ecclesiastical Electorate of Cologne. Even the norms of rulership to which the spiritual ruler was subject were contradicting itself: as a bishop, he was responsible for spiritual tasks that could sometimes be diametrically opposed to those as a secular ruler. In addition to this problem, which basically affected every spiritual rule, there is an additional peculiarity with regard to the Electorate of Cologne. Here it was also important to meet the demands of the different (partial) rulers, which did not always correspond. The aim of the volume is to illuminate this tense relationship between norm and practice, but also the interaction with memorable examples.
