Publisher's Synopsis

This special issue reflects the growing emphasis on cognitive issues in the field of hazard communication. Several of the papers focus on modeling the decision-making process followed by people when they decide how to respond to warnings and other forms of hazard communication. Raising a number of interesting research issues and providing a framework for future work in the area, this special issue should encourage cognitive scientists and engineers to join in the current efforts to evaluate, improve, and ultimately specify scientifically defensible guidelines on how to best communicate hazard information. There is little question that cognitive scientists and engineers can help build upon the models, and research findings, frameworks, and methods introduced in this special issue. Clearly, much work still needs to be done.
