Publisher's Synopsis
This inaugural lecture focuses on two very different Africans: the most influential king of the Gold Coast, Nana Sir Ofori Atta I and Isaac, the son of a Ghanaian doctor, both of whom were forced to make similar critical decisions during their lives.;As a historian, the author is saddened that all too often, important figures in African history are described as two-dimensional emblems, rather than real people with whom it is possible to identify. This problem, he argues, has denied insights into what living, breathing and, more importantly, thinking and feeling Africans in history were really like. The purpose of this lecture is to convey the feelings of the men involved, as well as stating the simple facts of their history.
