Hannah's friend, Miss Fischer, decides to solve Hannah's problems by giving her a valuable brooch. She is so full of enthusiasm for the idea that she fails to notice that she's left the gas on, and dies without having had a chance to tell Hannah where the brooch is hidden. Miss Fischer decides there is no alternative but to come back as a ghost. But giving someone a message when they can't see or hear you is not easy and Miss Fischer has to find many different ways of contacting Hannah before the brooch is found.
