Publisher's Synopsis
No Handbook of this size can realistically lead the reader step-by-step from the discovery of the diverse plant growth regulators to the forefront of modern plant growth regulator research. Therefore, a certain amount of background knowledge has had to be assumed. Furthermore, it has not been our intention to produce a handbook work describing every developmental event where plant growth regulators have been implicated. Rather we have preferred to concentrate on a critical appraisal of plant growth regulators in the regulation of representative processes. However, wherever possible, we have highlighted useful reviews, which provide background information, along with recent publications that have contributed significantly to the literature. This richly illustrated handbook is intended primarily for intermediate-level and advanced courses concerned with hormonal regulation of growth and development of seed plants including the hormonal regulation of flowering as well as the role of the phytochrome pigment system in the regulation of growth and development generally. There are frequent citations of the literature in the handbook. It is intelligible to the educated layman, though it deals with some complex ideas. It is an adequate text for all the requirements of students in this area. In addition, busy lecturers who require a quick references compendium will find it useful. Simple, yet hopefully clear figures and tables are provided throughout the volumes.
