This volume reviews the mechanisms underlying psychology and behavior in animals and humans, and examines the field comprehensively from a physiological standpoint. After an introductory chapter that briefly traces the history of neuroscientific thought and describes its social implications, 21 substantive essays survey such topics as learning and memory in nonmammalian and simple systems, mechanisms of emotion and attention, mechanisms of perception, and human disease and higher brain function.
