Excerpt from Handbook for the Beginner's Home Study in the Word of God
Now, in order to supply my own want, as well as that of others, I have in this book compiled a very brief Bible History and a short exposition of the Catechism, and have given it in the manner in which I have for years instructed adults. I have endeavored to speak simply and intelligibly to everyone. I do not take for granted either human learning or religious knowl edge. Only in the latter part of the book I expect the reader to have some spiritual understanding. I have tried to hold the reader's attention. The Bible History is given in the words of Scripture. The exposition of the Catechism is that of the church of the true faith, and addresses the reader in the manner of a teacher. The arrangement of the material may be seen from the Contents, and conforms to the conceptions of those who know little or nothing of the Christian doctrine.
