The first edition of the "Guidelines for the Assessment of General Damages in Personal Injury Cases" was published for the Judicial Studies Board for England and Wales in 1992. The Judicial Studies Board for Northern Ireland felt that it would be helpful to practitioners and others concerned with the assessment of damages if a Northern Ireland edition were produced.;At the board's suggestion, a committee was set up to compile "Guidelines" for this jurisdiction, following the format and injury classifications used in the original book.;The work was done by the committee with the assistance provided by the Judicial Studies Board for England and Wales.
