Ativan is a brand-name medication used to treat anxiety, insomnia related to anxiety, and various other conditions. It is available in two forms: oral tablets and an injectable solution that can be administered via intramuscular or intravenous injection.
Ativan (lorazepam) is classified as a benzodiazepine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Ativan for the following uses:
- Treating anxiety in adults and children aged 12 and older
- Addressing insomnia caused by anxiety in adults and children aged 12 and older
- Managing status epilepticus (a severe type of seizure) in adults
- Providing sedation prior to surgical procedures in adults
