Publisher's Synopsis
Groundwater supplies about one third of public water supplies in England and Wales and in the south-east of England this figure rises to over 70 per cent. These maps show areas where water bearing rocks (aquifiers) are vulnerable to pollution because of the type of soil cover above them. They are divided into major aquifiers (capable of yielding large quantities of water for abstracting), minor aquifiers (providing lower yields) and non-aquifiers based on the physical properties of the water bearing rocks. The overlying soils are similarly divided into high, intermediate and low vulnerability classes.
