This text provides an in-depth survey of the French engraver, Roger Vieillard. Vieillard (1907-89) began his career as an engraver in Hayter's Atelier 17 in 1935. He quickly established himself as the leading French engraver of the middle of the century, and as a distinguished illustrator of "livres d'artiste".;The volume includes a comprehensive essay by P.M.S. Hacker on Vieillard's engravings, a detailed survey of his "livres d'artiste" by Eunice Martin, and a personal tribute by Marc Fumaroli.
