IX. 12.--A prisoner of hope must not seek for relief by diversions of any kind, nor by a righteousness of his own, nor by slothfully lying down under his perplexity; but by a vigorous turning to Jesus Christ, the strong Hold. A brisk and cheerful application unto God for a sealed pardon gives unto God the glory of His grace. XIII. 1.--The law of God has both His authority and His holiness impressed upon it. Sin, as contrary to His authority, is attended with guilt, which produceth fear; and as contrary to God's holiness, is attended with filth or uncleanness, which produceth shame. Now this fountain is opened to purge both guilt and filth, and thus free us from fear and shame. Where an interest is obtained through faith in the purilying blood of Christ, it removes all loathsomeness in the sight of God from the sinner, so that he shall be treated as one absolutely purified before Him; and, secondly, it takes away fear and shame, and gives the soul boldness in the presence of God. MALACHI. III. 1.--" He whom I seek, and whom I delight in," is a believer's description of Christ, and God's description of a believer. Ver. 6.--" I am Jehovah; I change not." This unchangeableness of Jehovah relates not only to His essence, but to all His decrees, His threats, and promises. Hence, when God threatens any judgment, or promises any blessing, He usually confirms it by saying, "I am Jehovah;" or, "Thus saith JeHovah; " or, "Ye shall know that I am Jehovah." Where He brings in His great Name, Jehovah, as an argument of the unchangeableness of His counsel, what He saith shall certainly come to pass, because He who saith it is Jehovah. MATTHEW.
