The area around Tewkesbury is of great geological diversity, ranging from the Precambrian to the Quaternary age. On one side are the Malvern hills, AN AREA OF UNSPOILED NATURAL BEAUTY. tHE rIVER sEVERN RUNS THROUGH the middle of this REGION, and the Malvern axis, a major north-south geologicAL structure, divides the district. Small patches of glacial deposits in the west are relics of an ice sheet which advanced from the north.;Later Quaternary sediments include the sand and gravel of the Severn and Avon river terraces.;In this account the petrology of the Precambrian rocks, the stratigraphy of the sedimentary rocks and the geological structure are described and interpreted. It also contains new information obtained during the survey from boreholes put down through parts of the Cambrian, Silurian, Carboniferous, Triassic and early Jurassic sequences, and from seismic reflection surveys.
