The topographic map of the district (pl. XLII) includes an area of 1& by 21} miles, on a scale of or about 2 inches to a mile, the relief being shown by 50-foot contours. Where the Elkhorn district is mentioned in these pages this area is meant. All the more important prospect pits are located and the more important geological features are included within the area selected.
The chemical analyses in this report have been made in the labora tory of the Geological Survey by Dr. H. N. Stokes.
