I cannot hope to avoid the appearance of one-sided ness. Political and Economic History are passed coolly by. The vast bulk of events is untouched. I Shall seem to make ideas advance to the sound of the trumpet, like the things that happen in one of Dumas' novels. May be - which is worse - I shall appear to be writing a poor fairy story, and calling it philosophy of history. The one-sidedness, however, is conscious and avowed. It can deceive no one but myself, and I trust that even I Shall escape. My excuse is that one Sidedness is worth while. In the hope of proving it, thereby defending myself against that righteous horror of easy generalization which is the best side Of the intellectual life of our day, I venture to give a short syllabus of the main points that I desire to make good.
