This work was commenced by Mrs. Caroline Thatcher Cobb, of Saratoga Springs, N. Y., by whom very many of the later records were procured. And Miss Lucy E. Thacher (late Mrs. Allen) and we assume the publication of these records as a labor of love and respect for her memory. We should have been glad to have made them still more complete, but time and opportunity forbade. We return our thanks to the numerous members of the family who have so kindly furnished material for the book, and hope some future historian may be still more successful in preserving the records of this family, who have filled, by no means an unimportant part, in the annals of New England history.
