Publisher's Synopsis
The Nasser D. Khalili Collection is the greatest collection of Islamic art in private hands. Among its holdings are jewellery, goldsmith's work and hardstone carvings produced in Mughal India. This volume explores the work produced in the period from the golden age of Mughal power in the 17th century to the 19th century, when Queen Victoria succeeded the last Mughal emperor as ruler of India. It includes jewels owned by the Emperors themselves, luxury objects made for their courtiers and works in the Mughal taste commissioned by the Hindu nobility. It also contains fine South Indian jewellery and precious stones created outside the Mughal cultural orbit.
