Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, Vol. 16: Nasik
Another great, though less clearly marked, division runs north and south, the western portion being called Dang, the eastern Desh. Dang denotes a wild and hilly tract in which, though excellent soil is sometimes found, cultivation of the simplest kind is alone possible, owing to the excessive rainfall and the consequent prevalence of malaria during the cold season. Desh implies a wide extent of open champaign country in which large fields, irrigated gardens, and a system of crop rotation are the rule.
