Publisher's Synopsis

This book provides an extensive and readily comprehensible survey of the various aspects of applied mycology. Following an introductory chapter on fungal physiology and genetics, both traditional and modern applications of fungal biotechnology are discussed in individual chapters by competent researchers and experts from industry and the academic world. The book is thus highly amendable to practical purposes. The individual chapters are structured according to the following general pattern. The starting point is generally provided by a specific scientific problem (e.g. developing a drug to fight a certain pathogene), which is followed by a short description of the corresponding products and their occurrence in nature. Subsequently, current production including the most frequently used production methods is outlined. Other, not yet readily established approaches with alternative organisms are discussed. Finally, current research objectives and potential future developments are pointed out.
