Excerpt from From the Plains to the Pulpit
I was born in Ouachita County, Arkansas, about ten miles west of Camden, October 14, 1855. Camden at that time was the trading center of all Southern Arkansas, because many boats came up the Ouachita from New Orleans. My father at that time was run ning a large farm, and also owned and was running a large saddle shop, of which he was the boss work man and salesman, but had in his employment a num ber of good workmen.
