It is desired that this work may be con sidered, not as endeavouring to set forth in an exhaustive manner the action and capabilities Of Phosphorus in health and in disease, but as an attempt to render its employment safe, to make those results determinate and uniform which have hitherto been uncertain and vari able, and as a step only towards further clinical investigation.
Considerable Space is devoted to the pharma ceutical preparation Of Phosphorus. This is a matter Of the first importance; for the efficacy, stability, uniformity Of effect, and, above all, the safety Of the preparation, depend entirely upon the integrity Of the active agent contained in it. The imperfect methods Of exhibiting this remedy hitherto employed have contri buted largely to the apprehension with which its internal administration has been regarded, and which, under those circumstances, was doubtless reasonable.
