Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Fitz-Albion's Letters to the Right Hon. William Pitt, and the Right Hon. Henry Addington, on the Subject of the Ministerial Pamphlet Entitled Cursory Remarks on the State of Parties, by a Near Observer
On the 23d ofjune last, Ministers were most indignant at the disheartening language of several Gentlemen who 0p posed their mzddlmg measures, and suggested the propriety of taking precautions lest the Enemy, having made good his landing, should march to the Capital. The Right Honour able Gentleman (observed Mr. Addington, With a tone and gesture truly mzigisterial), has stated as a passvele case the Enemy's arriial in London, in spite of our fleetsiand our armies. Ifi wished to plunge the Nation in despair, I solemnly protest I could not do it more effeeiuallv than by making use of these precise words. In the month of July, Within twenty - eight day s of this ebullition ofcontidencc, an ofiicral note appears to hate been written by Lord cath cart to the Marquis of titchfield, in which Gmernment not only supposes the advance of the Enemy to the Capital 2 possible case, but issues orders to foitifv London for that, if there were no precautions taken, apprehensions for its secu rity might be entertained. I do solemnly protest (savs Mr. Adding ron), that ifi wished to plunge the Nation in despair, I could not do it more effeetually than by making use of these precise words. The mind of the Minister, no doubt, was Open to connection; and though he would not have ventured to touch upon these talismanic words, he felt no hesitatioii in publicly avowing his intention to aft upon them. But even after making the avowal, and plung ing the Nation into despair, in the most effectual mode he could devise, little has been done, although it is four months since the Letter was written, unless it be, that if we can decoy the Enemy into Essex, preparations are made to drown as many as will venture into the traps we have laid for them.
