Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from First and Last, Vol. 2 of 2: A Novel
He had heard, therefore, so much vice hinted at in others that he had almost grown to disbelieve in its existence, for it seemed to him that if all the men and women were one half as bad as their acquaintances painted them, it would be impossible that the world could contain such iniquity a moment longer. I do not say that, in a worldly sense, he might not have erred as much on the side of leniency as others on the side of severity but, if I must choose between the two, I would sooner have an enthusiast than a sceptic. There is something noble about a man who still believes in the capacity of his fellow creatures for good, while the cold-blooded cynic, who is for ever making out mankind as worse in their impulses and passions than the devils, is a hideous travestie of the creation he despises.
