Publisher's Synopsis
This is the sixth volume to be published in the Struik series of photographic field guides. It follows the standard field guide format and uses colour photographs to identify 337 mammal species known to occur in Southern Africa. It has now been translated into German as "Saugertiere Des Sudlichen Afrika". Where necessary, additional photographs are provided to emphasise diagnostic features. The photographs are grouped for ease of comparison and each is clearly captioned and cross-referenced to the relevant text entry on the facing page. Each species entry gives the animal's common name as well as its scientific name, its main identifying characteristics and information on size and mass, habitat, behaviour, reproduction and food. A distribution map accompanies each account. An innovative element is the highlighting of "identification pointers" as an aid to quick identification in the field. Spoor drawings of the larger species are included in a separate section to allow for immediate comparison. Indexes to common names and scientific names are supplied.
