Publisher's Synopsis
This book attempts to give a broad idea of the ferry services in Europe. Ferry services in a number of specific areas, such as the Eastern Mediterranean, UK, Baltic and Eastern European markets are analysed through separate sections. Education and training requirements for ferry services are also reviewed. In the first section, a model is developed to identify the comparative positioning of the European Union and Turkish passenger ferry operators in the Eastern Mediterranean market. The model ? with data from 1994 and 1997 for a comparison, is operationalized by using multidimensional scaling technique of the multivariate analysis techniques. The second section focuses on the market analysis of the UK passenger and car ferry industry covering both domestic and international ferry services. The Baltic Sea ferry and ro-ro market is analysed in the third section based on the crucial importance of the Baltic Sea as one of the world?s high density areas of maritime transport and the increasing economic and political value of the area after the recent EU membership of Sweden and Finland having close relations with the Eastern European States. The Baltic Sea market section is followed by a fourth section covering the analysis of the Eastern European ferry market and concentrating upon the Polish market in particular. Finally, after reviewing different ferry markets in Europe, a fifth section highlights the fact that little attention is being paid to the education and training requirements of the managers in ferry services in an era of change and new challenges.
