Als ich auf Anregung von Herrn Professor Dr. Max Koch in Breslau daran ging, Ferdinand Freiligraths Uebersetzungen einer kritischen Betrachtung zu unterziehen, vermutete ich noch nicht, in welchem Grade diese Arbeit auch geeignet sein wurde Aufschlusse uber des Dichters eigenes poetisches Lebenswerk zu geben. Je weiter ich aber in meiner Unter suchung fortschritt desto mehr befestigte sich in mir die Ueberzeugung, dass Freiligraths Verdeutschungen nicht nur um ihrer selbst willen Beachtung verdienen, sondern dass sie auch von hervorragender Bedeutung fur das richtige Ver standnis Freiligrathscher Poesie uberhaupt sind.
