Addressing core issues in the counselling and therapy of women, this study presents an empowerment model which examines the different sources of women's psychological distress and well-being. This model is systematically applied throughout the book to conceptualization, assessment and clinical practice with a range of problems. The underlying theme of the text is that the effective counselling of women requires that therapists have an awareness of personal stereotypes, an understanding of self in relation to women in contemporary society, and a sensitivity to the dual impact of sex-role socialization and institutionalized sexism on women's development.
