There are a number of core issues related to the mental health of women that suggest the need for a specialty in counselling and therapy with women. Among these issues are the special problems that women bring into the therapeutic setting, sex-role socialization in the development of women, the inadequacies of contemporary theory, research, and practice to address the lives of women, and the development of alternative approaches to conceptualization and intervention with women. The application of feminist principles to counselling and psychotherapy with women requires additional integration of theory with practice.
