When war breaks out in 1939, Sally Kennedy and Tessa Kilbride have already enjoyed several years of close friendship. Although superficially very different - Tessa is married to glamorous film star Sebastian while Sally's husband Nick is his accountant - they feel as close as sisters. With war comes change - Nick and Sebastian have volunteered for the forces and Sally has a job translating radio broadcasts.
