Publisher's Synopsis

While the Labour government has initiated policies to address growing concerns regarding the spillover effects of work on family life, little is known about the effects on family life of self-employment among ethnic minorities, despite the higher incidence of self-employment among them. This report redresses this neglect by examining work-life balance issues in family-run minority ethnic businesses. The report covers new ground by: · focusing on the self-employed and those working in family businesses; · comparing the relationship between family and work over time, at start-up and with business development, and at successive stages of the family life cycle; comparing differences in family involvement and attitudes to work and family life across different minority ethnic groups, between small and large businesses and traditional and knowledge-intensive sectors.
