Excerpt from Families of Virginia, Vol. 3: Barret
An. Account of a Barret family is} given in Hakluyt, Vol. 3, page 187 in which it is stated that Captain Robert Barret who served as Master of the Jesus, flagship of Admiral Sir John Haw kins, which sailed from Plymouth, England, October, 1567, in company with a fleet of five other ships. Another of these six ships Was commanded by Francis Drake. William Barret, son of Captain Robert Barret, was born in Wales June 22, 1566, and died in 1642. William Barret married Dorothy Payne and lived in London and was a member of the London Company which sent the first colonists to Virginia. It is not certain whether or not this William Barret came to Virginia but he had a son also named William who was born August 20, 1632, and died in July 1705. This second William is said to have married Anne, daughter of Governor Ludwell of North Carolina, who was born in 1651 and died in 1710. It is claimed that the first Charles Barret of Han over and Louisa was the son of William and Anne Ludwell Barret but no authority on documentary proof is given.
