Publisher's Synopsis

This is the story of Juan Francisco Cortes from his birth in 1904 to his death in 1938 towards the end of the Spanish Civil War. As soon as he is born he is taken from his unmarried mother by the Catholic Church and is adopted. As a young man he becomes a priest with the Church and as Civil War looms is sent to Seville to give the last rites to those about to be executed. Towards the end of the War Cortes loses his faith and speaks out against the corruption he has witnessed. But his enemies are building and soon several men believe the priest has stepped out of line once too often.
