I.' Christopher Columbus, on his second voyage from Spain to the unknown West, discovered the island of Porto Rico, November 16, 1493. Three days later he anchored his ships. Near the present site of Aguadilla, claimed the island for Spain and gave it the name of San Juan. The little Indian town on the shore was called Aguada.
