For centuries, nine powerful families have been tasked with keeping the dark powers of the world at bay. Twelve-year-old Jacob Turner happens to belong to one of these families. This, however, is a fact of which he is entirely unaware. Jacob's life takes a drastic turn when he is attacked by a dark creature in his home town in western New Jersey. In grave danger, Jacob is sent to a safe house for protection.
