Publisher's Synopsis
Fables of the Forest and Savanna combines natural history and humor in the form of eleven comic-style tales that document life in the grasslands and forests of tropical South America. Designed to promote understanding and sympathy for the native fauna and natural landscapes of the Neotropics, each fable comes with an ecology lesson. From leaf-cutter ants to armadillos, jaguar to crickets, the characters in the fables are South American grassland and forest animals, large and small, with distinct personalities and foibles. The hero Flaco ('Skinny') is a Maned Wolf, a threatened species whose conservation the authors are especially trying to encourage. Flaco's boon (and rather cynical) companion, Toco the Toucan, is the messenger who imparts the morality and conservation message of each fable.
