Publisher's Synopsis

This compilation of chapters into a commemorative volume is a landmark for celebrating 50 years of Social Work professional education in Singapore. From a Diploma course it evolved into a degree programme due to the demand for this training both in Singapore and the region. In 1986, the Psychology programme was introduced at the National University of Singapore and it was housed with the Social Work Department, comprising to a vibrant and enterprising Department of Social Work and Psychology at the National University of Singapore today. The aim of this volume is to convey to the reader the early history of the department, the status of a selected set of social issues in the Singapore context, as well as provide a birds eye view of the new frontiers of social work as envisioned by the faculty. It is hoped that readers will gain some insight into the developments of certain innovative social work methods within the local context, and if found useful, these could be modified to suit the readers socio-cultural, economic and political contexts.
