The narrative as a whole is now published for the first time in an English version. For convenience of comparison the French and Eng lish are given on opposite pages. While the translation, as a general rule, will be found to follow closely the original text, the liberty has sometimes been taken of breaking up long and involved sentences, and occasionally of dropping connective words, in conformity with the usage of to-day.
