Publisher's Synopsis
As the tools for knowledge representation become more powerful AI researchers need a better understanding of precisely what is to be represented and how such knowledge can be manipulated to reason in a human way.;This book derives from papers presented at the International Conference of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science. The conference is significant in a number of ways. It provides a forum for the synthesis of ideas from two converging research areas - knowledge representation by machines and knowledge representation by humans. It also marks the inaugural meeting of a new research group sponsored by the Information Engineering Directorate (the successor to the Alvey project).;This book thus sets the scene for future research in knowledge engineering by describing what is known so far and by describing what further research should endeavour to make known in the future.
