This publication is devoted to the study of the epidemiology of dementing diseases in Europe. It includes case-finding methods, measurement of exposures and still elusory disease, as well as the valid estimation of incidence rates. In particular, readers will profit from a comprehensive comparison and description of the methodologies employed in 17 studies of incidence in Europe; the presentation of the most recent figures on incidence of dementia in Europe; a discussion of some of the outstanding methodological problems that confront epidemiologic investigation into the incidence and risk factors for dementing diseases; and a summary of the findings of a re-analysis of the 11 extant case-control studies of risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.
