The authors have attempted to prepare in the present work a serviceable text-book of the History of the Middle Age for the use of the freshman and Sophomore classes in the American college. This end has subjected them to certain conditions and limitations: it has restricted the stope and compressed the contents of the book it has controlled the topical ar rangement and determined the method of presentation. It is fair to request that in forming an opinion about the book this fact should be kept in mind.
